Understanding the Technology Used in Live Casino Games - On: Yorkshire Magazine

A live blackjack table on a phone looks simple enough. There is a dealer, a stack of cards, a few betting controls and perhaps a chat box running beside the picture. What is much less obvious is that the game is also a small live broadcast, produced continuously and expected to react almost instantly to whatever happens at the table. That puts live casino in an unusual corner of online entertainment. It is part online casino games, part video stream and part interactive software, with all three having to agree with each other in real time. A delayed football stream can be annoying, but the viewer is still only watching. At a live casino table, the picture, the cards being dealt and the information shown on the player’s screen all have to remain closely connected.

The table is also a studio

Look behind the dealer and the setup starts to resemble a television production more than a traditional casino floor. Cameras cover the table from different positions, lighting has to keep cards and chips clearly visible, microphones carry the dealer’s voice and the stream has to work on everything from a large desktop monitor to a much smaller phone. The interesting part is that players are not supposed to spend much time thinking about any of this. If the broadcast is doing its job, attention stays on the blackjack hand or the roulette wheel rather than on the camera work. A close view appears when a card matters, the wider table remains visible when players need context, and the picture should remain clear even when somebody is playing over an ordinary mobile connection. That is much closer to live television production than many people probably expect from an online casino.

The game has to understand the broadcast

Video alone would not be enough. The digital part of the game also needs to know what is happening at the physical table. When cards are dealt, the interface has to reflect them. When betting closes on roulette, players need to see that change at the correct moment. Results then have to be recorded and the next round prepared without making the table feel as though it has stopped for a software update. This is one of the reasons live casino can feel quite different from a standard digital version of the same game. In normal online blackjack, every card exists inside the software from the beginning. At a live table, something is physically happening in another location and the platform has to bring that event onto the player’s screen. There is a surprising amount going on during what looks like an ordinary deal.

Phones made the production harder

Live broadcasting became even more important once casino games moved heavily onto phones. A stream that looks excellent on a large monitor may become awkward when it is squeezed onto a smaller display alongside betting controls and game information. That forced live casino developers to think about more than simply placing a camera in front of a table. The important parts of the picture need to remain visible, controls cannot cover the action, and the video still has to load without demanding an unnecessarily heavy connection. Players may never notice those decisions individually, but they notice very quickly when they are handled badly. Live casino is therefore an interesting example of where broadcasting and gaming have quietly met. The dealer and the cards may be the visible part, but behind them sits a production system working much more like a live digital channel than an old casino table. For something that arrives on a phone with a single tap, there is a surprisingly large studio hiding on the other side of the screen.
